Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace is holding a “Get Out The Vote Rally” with former U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
Mace is running for re-election in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District and faces Democratic nominee Annie Andrews in the General Election.
Gabbard was elected to Congress as a Democrat and ran for President as a Democrat in 2020, but a month ago she announced she was leaving the party and called on “fellow common sense independent-minded Democrats” to do the same.
Since the announcement, the Hawaiian politician has endorsed at least a dozen Republicans running for U.S. House or Senate in the Midterms.
As Mace’s campaign puts it, “former Rep. Gabbard is a national figure who campaigned in South Carolina as a candidate for the 2020 Democratic presidential Primary. Rep. Gabbard recently made waves announcing she has left the Democratic party to be an independent. She represents a growing widespread base of support for Rep. Mace’s re-election.”
Gabbard will appear with Mace at Saltwater Cowboys in Mount Pleasant at 6 p.m. today.
The contest for CD 1 has been contentious, with Mace and Andrews lobbing accusations that the other espouses extreme views.
During a televised debate, Andrews alleged that Mace supported a total ban on abortion — a half-true statement according to fact-checkers. Meanwhile, Mace claimed Andrews supports sex-reassignment operations for children, a claim that Andrews flatly denies.
CD 1 is considered a solid Republican seat, with prognosticators such as FiveThirtyEight giving Mace overwhelming odds to win re-election next week, likely by double digits.
