Alabama said nitrogen gas would remain an option, but that lethal injection would also remain in use and it would be up those on death row whether they wanted to die by nitrogen gas or lethal injection.
Nitrogen gas can be purchased easily without a license from manufacturers, industrial suppliers or even online retailers.
Around 60 people currently sit on Louisiana’s death row, according to the Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections.
The execution is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. local time but could be delayed until because of legal action or preparation.
‘In many respects, Alabama seems to have the awful ambition of setting a new, downward standard of humanity in the already questionable and barbaric world of capital executions.’
The pause came after the state halted two lethal injections because of difficulties inserting IVs into condemned men’s veins.
‘The fact of the matter is that an agency that has failed repeatedly to get its own house in order cannot be trusted to privately conduct an investigation into problems it is causing.’
Supporters call it a win for justice, but critics worry it will lead to more wrongful convictions.
