For nearly 50 years, only one Democrat has won the seat in Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District.
Among the well-known candidates are Democratic state Sen. Cleo Fields, a 61-year-old who served in Congress in the ‘90s, and Elbert Guillory, an 80-year-old Republican who is a former state Senator.
The lawmaker went on to say that a run in any ‘temporary district’ would cause ‘permanent damage to Louisiana’s great representation in Congress.’
For more than a year, Republicans have resisted drawing another minority district, saying that the current map, which has white majorities in five of six congressional districts, is fair and constitutional.
