The decision was a loss for Alabama Republicans, who were reluctant to create a Democratic-leaning district.
The judges said the state-drawn plan — which had one majority Black district out of seven in a state that is 27% Black — illegally diluted the political power of Black residents.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said the state will continue the legal fight to restore state-drawn lines, but Alabama will face a ‘court-drawn map for the 2024 election cycle.’
All three judges pointedly asked the state’s lawyer whether Alabama had ignored their finding.
