Republican Governors PAC launches Louisiana ads blasting Shawn Wilson’s ‘failed record’

RGA Right Direction PAC, the PAC for the Republican Governors Association, has launched the first ad in its initial investment into the Louisiana Governor’s race.

The 30-second spot, “Unless You Drive a Car,” attacks Shawn Wilson’s record as Louisiana Department of Transportation Secretary, including overseeing the state’s drop to nearly dead last in infrastructure rankings and an $18 billion backlog in necessary repairs.

The ad will air on television and digital platforms statewide and represents a seven-figure investment, the group said.

“In the nearly eight years that Shawn Wilson was in charge of the Louisiana Department of Transportation, Louisiana’s infrastructure got worse, not better,” said Courtney Alexander, RGA National Press Secretary.

“Adding to his failure, under Wilson’s watch Louisiana has reached an $18 billion backlog in needed repairs, costing Louisiana drivers an extra $650 a year in car repairs. If that was Shawn Wilson’s record while in charge of the roads and bridges, just imagine what it would be like if he ran the state.”

The ad begins with a narrator introducing voters to “bureaucrat Shawn Wilson.”

“He wants to be Governor, and that’s fine,” it continues before adding a caveat, “unless you drive a car.”

The ad notes that under his leadership, “Louisiana roads got worse” and the state has 1,500 bridges that are “dangerously deficient.”

It notes that the $18 billion backlog in needed repairs is costing taxpayers “$650 a year in extra car repairs.”

The ad ends by saying “no thanks” to Shawn Wilson.

Wilson is a Democrat running to replace incumbent Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards.

Republicans are fiercely trying to win back the Governor’s seat now that Bel Edwards is not seeking re-election due to term limits.

Wilson is one of three Democrats running. The Republican field is far more crowded, with eight candidates currently running. Wilson is considered a top contender, along with Republican Jeff Landry, who has already secured his party’s endorsement.
