A super PAC urging Ron DeSantis to run for President has released polling showing the Florida Governor with a double-digit lead over Donald Trump among Georgia Republican voters.
The poll, conducted by WPA Intelligence, surveyed 629 likely Republican voters in Georgia and found DeSantis leading Trump 48%-38% in a hypothetical head-to-head. With other candidates included, DeSantis leads 37%-36%.
WPA Intelligence conducted the poll March 28-29 using live telephone interviews and text messages. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%.
Never Back Down PAC’s poll dropped as DeSantis is scheduled to visit a Georgia gun store as part of a promotional tour for his recently released book, “The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival.”
It also comes as the national narrative on the DeSantis-versus-Trump has taken a swing back toward the former President. DeSantis’ momentum appeared to peak in the weeks after his dominant re-election win last year, but he has lost ground in the polls, most notably after he described the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a “territorial dispute.”
Never Back Down PAC was launched earlier this month by Ken Cuccinelli, the former Deputy Director of the Donald Trump-era Department of Homeland Security, who has been vocal in his support for a DeSantis presidential run.
While DeSantis has not officially announced he will run for President, and is not likely to do so until May or June, the committee is expected to serve as the main fundraising vehicle for his campaign. There are no contribution limits for super PACs, meaning DeSantis’ state-level committee could funnel up its $82.5 million balance after he officially declares his candidacy.
The committee has been staffing up since it launched earlier this month, most recently with the addition of one of the Governor’s top fundraisers, Heather Barker. Notably, the committee has also brought on some top staffers from former President Donald Trump’s failed 2020 campaign, including Erin Perrine and Matt Wolking.
