North Carolina’s Senators sign letter to DOJ condemning Donald Trump trial, conviction

Both of North Carolina’s Senators have signed onto a letter formally condemning the trial and conviction of former President Donald Trump, who was found guilty in a New York courtroom last month of 34 felonies.

U.S. Sens. Ted Budd and Thom Tillis, both Republicans, signed the letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. They were joined by 27 other Republican Senate colleagues, saying they “condemn this show trial, not just because it marks the attempt to imprison a leader of the loyal opposition, but because it threatens the existence of due process of law, without which a constitutional republic dedicated to the protection of individual liberty is not possible.”

Trump was convicted in late May by a New York State Supreme Court jury of covering up hush money payments to an adult actress in the run-up to the 2016 Presidential Election. Trump’s sentencing on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records is set for early July.

Budd and Tillis immediately registered their displeasure with the verdict when it was handed down on May 30.

The list of signatories to the June 13 letter, which does not demand any Justice Department action, includes U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Marcio Rubio and Rick Scott of Florida, Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott of South Carolina, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz of Texas, and others.

“The conviction of President Trump in Manhattan is nothing short of the evisceration of the American judicial process,” the Senators wrote. “In their zeal to imprison Donald Trump, Democrat prosecutors successfully dissolved the constitutional protections afforded to defendants and the barriers that protect every American from the abuses of arbitrary rule.”

The letter goes on to accuse the Joe Biden administration of being complicit in Trump’s trial and conviction, even though the case was brought by a state prosecutor on state charges over which the federal government has no sway.
