U.S. Sen. Mark Warner is mourning the loss of his daughter, Madison, who died following “a decades-long battle with juvenile diabetes and other health issues,” he and his wife, Lisa Collis, announced Monday.
The couple said their daughter’s “absence leaves an immeasurable void.”
“We are grateful for the loving support of friends and family during this difficult time,” the couple said, asking for privacy as they “navigate this profound loss.”
A Democrat, Warner has served in the U.S. Senate since 2009. Prior to that he served as Virginia’s Governor from 2002 until 2006. He was once considered a possible presidential contender, though never ran, citing his desire not to disrupt his family.
A former venture capitalist, Warner is one of the wealthiest members of Congress. As of 2018, he had an estimated net worth of more than $215 million, according to Open Secrets.
Business Insider reported last year that Warner was one of eight of the wealthiest Senators and the wealthiest Democratic Senator.
Warner is up for re-election this year, though he’s not expected to face a significant challenge.
