Georgia Republican state Sen. Greg Dolezal has entered the race to become the state’s next Lieutenant Governor.
The four-term Senator from Cumming was first elected in 2018 and is a staunch ally of President Donald Trump who styled himself in his campaign announcement video, as many GOP candidates in the Trump-era do, as the only “Trump conservative” in Georgia.
“I’m running for Lieutenant Governor because we are at a turning point as the radical left continues to threaten our public safety,” Dolezal said. “They launched riots, they burned out cities, opened the border, and let dangerous criminals into our country.”
Dolezal lamented the assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, which Dolezal says happened because Kirk believed in free speech.
“As Lieutenant Governor, I will crack down on these extremists and those who radicalize them,” Dolezal said.
He added that he will eliminate “every DEI program in every government agency in Georgia,” because taxes “shouldn’t have to fund divisive and unconstitutional policy.”
Dolezal then alleged a “transgender indoctrination” agenda.
“We will stop transgender indoctrination in our schools and universities and remove every rogue prosecutor who puts their soft-on-crime political agenda over public safety,” Dolezal said.
Dolezal sponsored the Riley Gaines Act, named after college swimmer Riley Gaines, who lost a championship race to transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. The legislation banned transgender students from participating in girls’ and women’s sports.
Dolezal is now one of seven Republicans who have joined the race, including state Sens. Steve Gooch, Senate President Pro-tem John Kennedy, Blake Tillery, state Rep. David Clark, Brenda Nelson-Porter, who previously ran for Georgia Secretary of State, and political newcomer Jerry Timbs.
On the Democratic side is state Sen. Josh McLaurin, and Richard N. Wright, who previously ran in the Democratic Primary for state Senate in District 38.
Dolezal is one of four state Senators who worked to overturn the results of the 2020 election after former President Joe Biden was declared the winner. Accusations of widespread voter fraud or of a stollen election have been widely debunked. Dolezal also pushed to sanction Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for prosecuting Trump, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
