Global firm expansion in Northern Virginia expected to create more than 1,200 jobs

An independent tech and analytics firm specializing in security and defense is expanding its operations in Northern Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin said Thursday.

Systems Planning and Analysis (SPA) is investing $46.9 million across the City of Alexandria and Fairfax County, which is expected to create more than 1,200 new jobs. SPA is a global and independent analytical and technical innovation firm that supports national security programs and defense priorities.

“In Northern Virginia, SPA is expanding their operations at the speed of Virginia,” Youngkin said in a statement. “The Commonwealth’s strategic location, pro-business policies, and access to world-class talent made the decision to grow here easy for the SPA team. Together, we are working to push creative boundaries in the world of data, security, and national defense.”

SPA has already purchased a state-of-the-art office building in Alexandria that will serve as part of the company’s headquarters expansion. The building is undergoing renovations to create a modern workspace for employees, including new technology and infrastructure.

The company plans to continue expanding over the next five years, which will create an additional 494 new jobs in Alexandria. Operations in Fairfax County will also be expanded, with the company anticipating growth at an already existing facility in Chantilly.

Investment in Fairfax County is expected to create another 714 new jobs.

Secretary of Commerce and Trade Juan Pablo Segura said Virginia is excited to be working with SPA and to see its rapid expansion in the state.

“This announcement doesn’t just put SPA at the front of the pack; it puts the Commonwealth there as well,” Segura said. “I am proud to join SPA, Alexandria, and Fairfax County in celebrating what this means for the region.”

The planned investments are expected to significantly increase operations and workforce over the next five years, while fostering the advancement of national security in a competitive marketplace.

SPA Chief Executive Officer Rich Sawchak said the company is thrilled to “deepen our roots” in Alexandria and Fairfax County.

“This expansion reflects our commitment to providing exceptional data-driven analytical insights to our clients while fostering innovation within our own organization. We are excited to welcome new talent and invest in the local economy,” Sawchak said.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the City of Alexandria, and Fairfax County collaborated on the project. Youngkin also approved $9.2 million in grants from Virginia’s Opportunity Fund for the project.

City of Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins congratulated SPA on their growth across the region.

“The purchase of their office headquarters is a signal of their commitment to and investment in Alexandria, where they will grow their workforce and community partnerships,” Gaskins said. “This planned regional growth cements their place as a pillar of the defense and national security industry, and we are proud to add them to the growing list of Alexandria business success stories.”
