Bob Trammell mulling bid for Georgia Attorney General

Former Georgia Democratic state Rep. Bob Trammell is taking steps to run for Georgia Attorney General in 2026, with the launch of an exploratory committee mulling a potential bid.

Trammell is the former Democratic leader in the Georgia House of Representatives, and is the first Democrat to signal interest in the race for Attorney General.

The move comes after incumbent Republican Chris Carr announced he will be pursuing the GOP nomination for Georgia Governor.

Republicans also vying for the AG position include Brian Strickland of McDonough and Bill Cowsert of Athens.

Trammell, a Luthersville native, confirmed to 11Alive he will be filing paperwork Tuesday and said in a statement he’s humbled by the encouragement and conversations he has had with Georgians about the challenges and opportunities they face.

“Like many Georgians, I’m deeply concerned about protecting our future – for our families, our livelihoods, and our rights,” Trammell said. “Establishing an exploratory committee for Attorney General is an essential step in considering the right path forward to protect all Georgians. This is a time for deep and prayerful consideration. As a practicing lawyer, I’ve always believed the most important tool we have is a listening ear, and that principle will guide me during this exploratory process.”

Trammell was first elected in 2014 to Georgia House District 132, winning again in 2016 and 2018, but was unseated by Republican David Jenkins by less than a thousand votes in 2020.

Jenkins had substantial financial backing from the GOP, which focused on snagging Trammell’s district situated southwest of Atlanta, after the district showed support for President Donald Trump in 2016 and Gov. Brian Kemp in 2018, according to WABE.

Trammell practices law at The Trammell Firm, which he founded in 2003. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1996 and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1999.
