Biogen commits $2B for North Carolina life sciences

Biogen is expanding its presence in North Carolina, North Carolina Democratic Gov. Josh Stein and company leaders announced Thursday as part of Biogen’s 30th anniversary celebration.

Biogen pioneers innovative science to develop groundbreaking medicines. It’s investing $2 billion in the expansion.

“North Carolina is a global leader in life sciences, and Biogen has been at the heart of that story for three decades,” Stein said in a press release. “This new $2 billion investment means more innovation, more good-paying jobs, better health, and a stronger economy.”

Biogen manufactures several different medicines used for treatment in neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, Friedreich’s ataxia (a rare inherited disorder that causes progressive damage to the nervous system), Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The company currently employs more than 1,500 North Carolinians, and the state’s life sciences industry supports more than 225,000 jobs, while generating $88.3 billion in annual economic activity.

State Sen. Jay Chaudhuri said the company has made a huge impact on the people of North Carolina through job creation and boosting the economy.

“For three decades, Biogen has been driving scientific discovery and making a difference in patients’ lives with cutting-edge medication for MS, ALS, and Alzheimer’s,” Chaudhuri wrote on X. “Companies like Biogen show how public–private partnerships can strengthen our economy, create good jobs, and improve lives. Here’s to 30 more years of innovation and impact.”

As part of the 30-year celebration, Biogen announced it is donating $250,000 to Durham Technical Community College to support the construction of a new life sciences building, to bolster the state’s talent pipeline.

The Durham Tech facility will provide education and hands-on training to foster careers in biotechnology and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

In late September, Fujifilm Biotechnologies announced it is investing in a new facility in Holly Springs, with the project expected to create more than 1,400 jobs by 2031 and grow North Carolina’s economy by $10 billion over the next ten years.
