Abigail Spanberger intensifies cost of living push as early voting begins

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger is doubling down on her stance that Virginia families deserve a Governor who will focus on lowering costs, as the first day of early voting begins.

A new Christopher Newport University poll shows cost of living is a top concern for Virginia voters. Another poll from the Virginia Commonwealth University echoes that sentiment.

“Everywhere I travel across the Commonwealth — from Norfolk to Norton, I hear from Virginians who are working harder than ever but struggling to make ends meet. Virginia’s Governor should actually work with both parties to address the challenges they face — and as the next Governor of our Commonwealth, I will be laser-focused on making Virginia more affordable for Virginia families,” Spanberger said in a press release. “That’s why I’ve rolled out real plans to lower costs at the doctor’s office and at the pharmacy counter, in the housing market, and on Virginians’ utility bills.”

Spanberger added that Virginia faces ongoing job losses, hits to the economy, and reduced access to affordable health care.

“Virginians deserve a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, and an Attorney General who will always put Virginians first — and our neighbors now have the opportunity to choose leaders who will do just that,” Spanberger said. “I hope all Virginians will join me in casting their ballots, making their voices heard, and building a stronger Virginia.”

Spanberger has focused her campaign on delivering results for Virginia families, something she argues her opponent, current Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, isn’t doing, and plans to roll out several plans if elected to address some of the most pressing issues. That includes lowering prescription drug costs by cutting out middlemen and allowing Virginians to use the pharmacy of their choice.

To lower housing costs, Spanberger plans to give cities and counties more flexibility to build additional housing by cutting red tape and reducing regulations that slow construction.

Spanberger further plans to lower energy costs by increasing local generation, ensuring data centers are not driving up energy costs, and addressing regulatory roadblocks that prevent new energy projects.

The former CIA officer and Congresswoman has repeatedly called out Republican opponentEarle-Sears over her support for President Donald Trump’s tax bill that removed thousands of Virginians from Medicare and is projected to raise mortgage payments and utilities.

Early voting runs through Nov. 1. The deadline to register to vote is Friday, October 24. The General Election is Tuesday, November 4.
